Super Sub Hassan Musa wins it for the Lions at the death to complete a hard earned second half comeback.
The selection
Yakubu Emmanuel started in goal, Ojo Seun was partnered by Adegbite Samson and Ucheibe Prince in a 3-man defence line. Adeyemi Adedayo was preferred to start in defensive midfield while Onome Adepoju and Ibitayo Omolade got the nod to start from wingbacks. Akinbola Oloore and Ukana Temitope started in midfield while the duo of Sunday Amaechi and Dahunsi Tobi got the nod upfront.
Missed chances
The lions took the bull by the horn and dictated play by creating chances from the start and could have taken the deserved lead as early as in the 4th minute when Dahunsi Tobi fired an outside shot which missed the top right corner by a whisker with Amaechi and Omolade also missing chances of their own few minutes after. Dahunsi Tobi also missed another chance in the 16th minute after being set up nicely by Onome Adepoju but the former dragged his effort wide.
The opponent however went on to take the lead against the run of play when Yakubu Emmanuel miskicked a pass to the feet of an attacker to allow the visitors take the lead cheaply.
The boys however were not perturbed and kept pressing and could have restored parity in the 20th minute but Amaechi’s effort struck the base of the goal post instead with the forward also pulling a brilliant save from the goalkeeper off a set piece to end the first half with a goal deficit.
Comeback
The coach however opted for 5 changes before the second 45 minutes by introducing chinedu, Melody, Lekan, Sunday and Afolabi into the fray.
Parity was finally restored in the 55th minute when Akpovie after making a fine run down the left flank sent a pass to Amaechi who took a one time shot at goal which the goalkeeper spilled to allow Dahunsi Tobi poke the ball in off the rebound. The boys kept pressing for more by dictating play nicely and the opponent were reduced to 10-men in the 78th minute after an intentional foul on Dahunsi Tobi.
The deserved winner however came through Hassan musa who came on in the 65th minute after a scramble in the opponent’s box, Terdoo Melody then set him up allowing Musa to fire an unstoppable effort past the goalkeeper to win it as that action turned out to be the last kick of the game.
