Wonderxchange FC kicked off their league campaign with a hard-earned victory over Saint FC in an intense encounter. Captain Sunday Emmanuel led the team, while Taiwo Ogunleye and Godspower Ikechukwu made their full National League One debuts. Additionally, Chinedu Okorie made a return to the squad.

The Selection

The gaffer had a fully fit squad at his disposal, with no injuries affecting the U-19 squad members. Tope Otaki, in excellent form, took his place in goal, supported by Tomisin Ayodeji at left back and Miracle Edwin at right back. The central defensive partnership of Sunday Emmanuel and Bonny Akingbade remained resolute. In midfield, the energetic Taiwo Ogunleye and the promising Godspower Ikechukwu, both making their league debuts, provided stability. Melody Terdoo operated in the attacking midfield role, while Musa Hassan, Opeyemi Michael, and Chinedu Okorie formed the attacking trio.

What happened

The match started with the Lions creating two quick chances. However, the goalkeeper managed to punch away Godspower’s strong cross, and Melody’s shot was deflected for a corner kick. Saint FC had a momentary celebration when they found the net, but the assistant referee’s flag was raised for offside, providing relief to Wonderxchange FC.

Bonny had an opportunity to give the Lions the lead from a cross by Melody, but he sent his effort over the bar. Despite end-to-end action, neither team managed to break the deadlock. Tope Otaki came to the rescue with two consecutive saves, denying the opponents a lead.

Finally, in the 36th minute, a brilliant finish by Opeyemi Michael put Wonderxchange FC in the lead. Miracle Edwin provided a precise assist, sending a pinpoint pass to Opeyemi, who made a clever run, rounded the goalkeeper, and calmly slotted the ball home from a tight angle.

As the first half came to a close, the score remained Wonderxchange FC 1 – Saint FC 0, with Opeyemi’s strike separating the two sides at the interval.

In the second half, Wonderxchange FC had a chance to double their lead as Opeyemi aimed for a brace, but his left-footed strike lacked the power to beat the defense. The team was unfortunate not to be awarded a clear penalty after Opeyemi skillfully evaded two defenders but was brought down.

Musa Hassan received a booking for a foul in the 65th minute, leading to Wonderxchange FC making their first substitution. Oluwatobi Dahunsi came on for Musa Hassan. However, the team suffered a setback as Taiwo Ogunleye limped off injured, resulting in Femi Olofinjana replacing him. The match became even more intense, with one of the assistant coaches being sent off due to a touchline brawl.

The opponent fought hard to get back into the game, but Wonderxchange FC’s resolute defense held firm. In the 88th minute, Opeyemi Michael made way for Lekan Arifayan as a substitution was made which happened to be the last significant action of the game.

When the final whistle blew, Wonderxchange FC emerged victorious, a hard-earned winning start to their league campaign.
