In-form forward, Chinedu Okorie nets a brace to fire the Lions to victory against the visiting Ekiti based side
The selection
Following the 0-0 draw against EKITI UNITED which was our last match action, Coach Olayiwola made a change in defence by replacing the injured Ojo seun with Adegbite Samson.
Team captain Ajeyomi Lekan leads the defence line with Sunday Emmanuel to make a back three. The new partnership in defensive midfield continued with both Afolabi Adeyina and Adeyemi Adedayo continuing their newly found match. Omolade and Akpovie started from wingbacks.
The creative Terdoo Melody started in attacking midfield, the attacking pair of Chinedu Okorie and Dahunsi Tobi upfront with both forwards having impressively scored and assisted each other 8 times in the last 6 games.
How it went
The Lions took an early lead in the second minute when Dahunsi Tobi went on a solo run after breaking free from midfield, he took a shot at goal from the left side but the goalkeeper spilled the effort and the ball fell to the feet of Chinedu Okorie who tucked the ball into an empty net.
The away side had few chances of their own in the first half but were wasteful in front of goal leaving us with the slim lead heading into the halftime break.
The opponent started the second half on the front foot and could have equalized in the 47th minute when the number 9 was one on one with the goalkeeper but Emmanuel Yakubu made himself big and denied his effort with a brilliant save.
Chinedu Okorie could have gotten his brace earlier in the 49th minute when his left foot strike was denied by the crossbar. He however went on to get the brace in the 64th minute when the visiting goalkeeper took a heavy control from a back pass, the energetic forward got to the ball before the goalkeeper could correct his mistake, rounded him and passed the ball into an empty net for a well deserved brace before he was replaced by Amaechi Sunday.
The Lions however were given a reality check when the visiting side reduced the deficit in the 71st minute and equalized in quick succession in the 72nd minute but the lions roared back to life and got back the lead in the 77th minute after a scramble with the referee deciding the ball passed the goal line despite them making a clearance and the lead was further doubled in the 79th minute by Amaechi Sunday with a very beautiful strike from the edge of the box.
