Resilient Lions fought back from two goals down to start the new month with a win
The Selection
Coach Gbenga Ologun made a few changes to his side that were held to a goalless draw by Excellence FC last week. Center backs Emelike Victor, and Akingbade Bonny pulled out before kickoff after both felt unwell and were replaced with Emmanuel Segun and Ogundumila Opeyemi, respectively.
While two new boys, Abimbola Olanrewaju and Samuel Oyekola, who are being accessed on trial, were given the nod to start in attack.
Slow start
The visitors showed better enthusiasm in the early stage after kick and got the lead as fast as in the 3rd minute when the visitor’s number 9 Emmanuel fired them into the lead by pouncing on a rebound off a spilled effort by our goalie. Emmanuel went on to double his team’s lead just 5 minutes after his opener after we gave away possession cheaply in our half, and Emmanuel fired a one-time effort from a distance past Otaki Tope in goal.
Both goals, however, gave the Lions the wake-up call they probably needed as they went on to dictate play with the majority of the possession and kept knocking on the opponent’s door, which they later found a breakthrough in the 36th minute after both new boys combined with Abimbola sending in a cross into the box from a free kick which was met by a tap in into the net by Oyekola Samuel to end the first 45 minutes with the Lions trailing by a goal deficit.
Mouthwatering 45
The Lions picked up from where they left off before the break and continued to give the opposition’s defense all sorts of troubles, and that paid off in the 57th minute through a pile-driver from a distance by Olanrewaju Abimbola.
The Lions, however, didn’t waste much time to take the lead for the first time in the game when Ogundumila Opeyemi curled in a free kick into the top right corner of the net from a direct free kick to complete the fantastic comeback for the lions who never backed down or felt demotivated after going behind by those two early goals. There were few chances to extend the scoreline by the lions, but the chances were not well taken to leave the scoreline at 3-2 and give the lions the needed boost going on into the new month on a positive note.
What’s next:
The boys will take a day break before returning to training on Saturday morning to continue their preparations for the task ahead.
